PRINCIPLES OF ARMED SELF-DEFENSE – Course 1
This 3-hr seminar is truly the “next step” for those citizens who’ve completed a defensive handgun shooting class or those considering a handgun for self-defense. The course will help you develop a holistic understanding of defensive stance and our 4-part system for responding to and prevailing through a self-defense encounter, whether you utilize a weapon or not. While this seminar is primarily designed around using a firearm it is meant to establish a strong foundation upon which any tool for self defense can be inserted.
Topics of instruction will include:
- Principles of a Defensive Stance
- Efficiency in Movement
- Creating Distance & Using Angles to Gain a Strategic Advantage
- Weapon Retention & Weapon Accessibility
Course is limited to 8 students. Cost is $50.
TEN MINUTE MEDICINE – Lifesaving Training Course
CWR is pleased to offer a lifesaving course. Ten Minute Medicine is an absolute must for anyone serious about their own safety and the safety of loved ones. The first time you use this medical gear should not be when it counts; get trained on proper equipment and its application. This course will prepare you to deploy lifesaving measures for yourself and others.
By the end of the Ten Minute Medicine course, students will:
• Recognize the causes of preventable death and be able to treat victims of penetrating trauma.
• Learn basic human anatomy and the signs and symptoms of shock.
• Discuss emergency stress reduction techniques, expectations, and communication with 911 dispatchers in the event of an emergency.
• Learn about the Iowa Trauma System, local community capability and resources in regards to trauma victims.
• Understand wound ballistics on the human body from various weapon types.
• Have hands on training with and demonstrate the use of tourniquets, chest seals, bandages, hemostatic agents, and airway management techniques.
• Learn various emergency lifts and carry techniques.
• Participate in realistic scenarios, testing the ability to rapidly assess victims for life-threatening injuries, and the application of first aid devices in a high stress environment.
• Discuss the newest first aid kits and equipment available to the public.

NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home Shooting Course
This 1 day course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.
Students should expect to shoot approximately 100-150 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment. Cost of this course is $150 per student.
NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Shooting Course
The NRA Personal Protection OUTSIDE the Home Shooting Course is the ideal course for the student who demands a thorough training course. The main focus of this course is the effective use of a concealed handgun for self defense on the street. Included are chapters on concealment techniques and devices, presenting the handgun from concealment, utilizing cover and concealment outdoors. This innovative course include presentation and movement, point shooting, instinctive shooting, low-light shooting, engaging multiple targets and one-hand shooting. These skills and other presented in this course form the core shooting skills used to counter a life-threatening attack outside the home.
The 2-Day course covers presentation from a concealed holster (or purse), shooting from cover, shooting one-handed, point shooting, moving while shooting, shooting from low cover, shooting from sitting, turning, prone, low-light and hip-shooting (called the “speed rock”). In total there are seven segments including Strategies for Personal Safety Outside the Home; Carrying a Concealed Handgun and Presenting from Concealment; Developing Basic Defensive Shooting Skills; Developing Concealed Carry Skills; plus the all-important Self-Defense and the Law. The course is a hands-on program with both levels encompassing fourteen hours of classroom and range instruction.
This is an intermediate/advanced handgun course that well exceeds minimum requirements for an Iowa Permit to Carry Weapons.
Cost of the 2 day course is $225. Students who complete the course will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home Handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules Brochure, Student Exam, Basic Firearm Training Program Brochure, and Personal Protection Outside The Home Advanced Course Certificate.
Students should bring their defensive caliber handgun, belt-slide (strong side) holster, eye & ear protection, cleaning kit and 250 rounds of factory, practice ammunition.
