Instructor Courses

CWR Firearms Training is proud to offer the following NRA Instructor training courses.

  • Basic Pistol Instructor
  • Basic Rifle Instructor
  • Basic Shotgun Instructor
  • NRA CCW Instructor – **New class in 2019**
  • Personal Protection Inside the Home Instructor
  • Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor
  • Chief Range Safety Officer

To qualify as an NRA Instructor:

  • Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified. Additionally, candidates are required to have completed the basic level course for each discipline they seek to become certified to instruct i.e. must complete the 1-day basic pistol shooting course before completing the pistol instructor course.
  • Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearms handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing pre-course questionnaires and qualification exercises administered by the NRA Appointed Training Counselor.
  • Candidates must satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course in the discipline they wish to teach (e.g., NRA Basic Pistol Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting that training.

Basic Instructor Training (B.I.T) – Included in the price of the Instructor Course, $75 if scheduled seperately

1-day – B.I.T. is required of all new instructors; this course provides instructor applicants from any discipline with a solid foundation to understand the NRA’s teaching methodology, course structure, and administrative policies, plus more.

Basic Pistol Instructor – $350
This 1-day course (approx. 10 hours) provides instructor applicants with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to instruct the NRA’s Basic Pistol Shooting course or the First Steps Pistol Shooting course.  Topics of instruction include handgun safety, nomenclature, ammunition knowledge, firing the first shots, teaching the two-handed and one-handed shooting positions, maintenance, cleaning and storage of handguns, plus selection, and additional training opportunities.  Please note, this is not an operator’s course, the focus of this course is learning to teach, applicants must have excellent safe gun handling skills and good pistol marksmanship skills.

Basic Rifle Instructor – $350

For those individuals who desire the opportunity to become a certified rifle instructor. This two-day course includes more than 20 hours of focused training to ensure that each newly certified instructor understands and is capable of instructing new shooters in the proper fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, to include rifle parts & nomenclature; safe handing & mechanics of operation; position shooting including bench rest, prone, sitting, kneeling, & standing; ballistics & ammunition selection; optics & sight usage; and much more.

Class is two days – 20+ hours of training time. Students will complete the NRA Basic Rifle Instructor Training, as required by the NRA. All course materials are included in the course fee.

Basic Shotgun Instructor – $350

This 1-day course (approx. 10 hours) provides instructor applicants with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to instruct the NRA’s Basic Shotgun Shooting course or the First Steps Shotgun Shooting course.  Topics of instruction include shotgun safety, nomenclature, ammunition knowledge, firing the first shots, teaching students to hit an aerial clay target, maintenance, cleaning and storage of shotguns, plus selection, and additional training opportunities.  Please note, this is not an operator’s course, the focus of this course is learning to teach, applicants must have excellent safe gun handling skills and good shotgun marksmanship skills.

NRA CCW Instructor – $400
This 2-day course provides instructor applicants with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to instruct the NRA’s Basic CCW Course. The CCW Course is a modular course that can be scaled from 1 to 16 hours, based on the instructor and student’s training goals and state requirements for the student’s permit to carry.  Topics of instruction include: Review of the CCW course, Drawing from Concealment, Loading & Stoppage Remediation, Mindset, Responding to an Attack and the Aftermath, Carry Modes & Pistol Concealment, Student Defensive Pistol Skills, Running/Managing a CCW Line, including Range & Drill Preparations, Student Live Fire Drills, NRA CCW Instructor Live Fire Qualification and Written Exam.  This is a challenging class, with difficult, reasonable standards.  In initial offerings of the course, about 30-40% of instructor candidates failed the course and were required to retake the class.  Please understand these standards are in place for good reasons.  If you are looking for a challenge to differentiate you as an instructor along with your courses, this is the class for you.

Personal Protection Inside the Home Instructor – $350

The NRA Basic of Personal Protection Inside the Home (PPITH) Instructor course is approximately 10 hours and will prepare NRA Certified Pistol Instructors to schedule & teach the NRA Personal Protection in the Home Shooting Course. Instructor candidates will learn methods of instruction on basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor – $400

The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home (PPOTH) Instructor course is two full days and will prepare NRA Certified Pistol / PPITH Instructors to schedule & teach the NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Shooting Course. Instructor candidates will learn methods of instruction on presentation from a concealed holster (or purse), shooting from cover, one-handed shooting, point shooting, moving while shooting, shooting from low cover, shooting from sitting, turning, prone, low-light and hip-shooting (called the “speed rock”). In total there are seven segments including Strategies for Personal Safety Outside the Home; Carrying a Concealed Handgun and Presenting from Concealment; Developing Basic Defensive Shooting Skills; and Developing Concealed Carry Skills.  If you are truly interested in offering a well-rounded permit to carry course, these certifications will allow you to offer more fully-developed courses, that specifically address the defensive use of a handgun outside the home. Additionally, certification as a PPOTH Instructor also authorizes these instructors to offer the NRA Defensive Pistol Course.
