Rifle

Our Defensive Rifle series courses are designed to help students develop their defensive firearms skills; clearly not with the intent of being in a “gunfight”, but with the hope that if not able to avoid such a conflict, they prevail.  In truth, defensive firearms skills are based on solid fundamentals; regardless of age or gender, these skills are rooted in the basics of marksmanship coupled with basic principles of self-defense – posture, breathing, relaxation, and communication.

Familiarization / Introduction to the AR-15

Developed to give you the basics on how to manipulate and maintain a safe and reliable rifle, this 4-hour non-firing class is designed for both the first time owner and the seasoned veteran.  This course will cover the major components for the AR15 and how each part functions, the proper field-striping, cleaning, and maintenance of the rifle, manipulations of the fire control group, explanation of the “Cycle of Operation” and its relationship to malfunctions, learning to safely load, unload, and reload the rifle, applying the 7 principles of marksmanship to the AR platform, and identifying common malfunctions, and learning to perform the S.P.O.R.T. Clearance drill.

This course will prepare students for our Defensive Rifle 1 course.  Required equipment: AR-15 Style Rifle, (1) magazine.  Recommended equipment: additional magazine, chamber flag, cleaning kit (to include solvent, cleaning rod, bore brush, jag, scrub brush, chamber brush & rod, rags, q-tips, bore patches, gun oil). Course fee $60.

Defensive Rifle 1

This 1 day, range only class is for students who want/need to develop these strong fundamentals.  Initially focusing on the 7 elements of marksmanship – stance, grip/hold, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger press, breathing, and following through – students will develop reliable, defensive accuracy.  From there students will build solid, fundamental skills in the following areas:

  • Positional shooting
  • Reloads
  • Stoppage clearance
  • Movement
  • Use of cover & concealment
  • Verbalization / Communication

The mission of CWR Firearms Training is to train our students to continually master the basics.  Defensive Rifle 1 provides responsible citizens with a excellent opportunity to further develop reliable defensive skills and continue on the path of mastering the basics.

Student should bring a reliable semi-auto rifle with three magazines, 250 rounds of practice ammunition, magazine pouch (or work from a rear pocket) cleaning equipment, and eye & ear protection.  The course is limited to 10 students. Cost of the course is $150 and pre-registration is required.

This course is not a basic/introductory marksmanship course; students should be comfortable shooting defensive caliber semi-auto rifles and have the ability and experience to follow the NRA’s Three Rules for Safe Gun Handling – safety violations on the range will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the course.  Good examples of preparatory courses / experience are the CWR AR Familiarization Course, NRA First Steps or Basic Rifle Shooting class, participation in an IDPA/USPSA/3-Gun Match, completion of an Appleseed Project Rifle Course, or Instructor Discretion.
